In a significant move towards improving healthcare services in Punjab, Ms. Nadia Saquib, Secretary Health Punjab, recently chaired a crucial meeting with the health team from the British High Commission (BHC). The meeting, held at the Punjab Health Department, focused on forging strategic partnerships to enhance the province’s healthcare landscape.
The high-level discussion centered around several key initiatives aimed at bolstering the healthcare infrastructure and services in Punjab. These initiatives are expected to have far-reaching impacts on the quality and accessibility of healthcare for millions of Punjab residents.
One of the primary agenda items was the development of a comprehensive policy brief for provincial health accounts. This initiative aims to provide a solid foundation for evidence-based decision-making in the healthcare sector. By analyzing and presenting detailed financial data related to healthcare expenditures, the policy brief will enable policymakers to make informed decisions about resource allocation and healthcare priorities.
The meeting also addressed the need for a rapid review of healthcare facilities across Punjab. This assessment will focus on evaluating the capacity of existing facilities to implement Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The review is expected to identify gaps in infrastructure, staffing, and resources, paving the way for targeted improvements to ensure that all residents have access to essential health services.
Another critical point of discussion was the development of district-level action plans for the rollout of the Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS). These plans will serve as roadmaps for implementing a standardized set of health services across all districts in Punjab. The meeting also emphasized the importance of establishing robust monitoring mechanisms to track the progress of EPHS implementation.
To ensure the effective delivery of the EPHS, the collaboration will involve setting up district implementation support teams in selected districts. These teams will provide on-the-ground support, addressing challenges and facilitating smooth implementation of the essential health services package.
In a move towards greater transparency and accountability, the partnership will provide technical assistance for conducting third-party performance audits of healthcare establishments in Punjab. These audits will help identify areas of excellence as well as areas needing improvement, ultimately contributing to higher standards of care across the province.
Secretary Health Ms. Nadia Saquib expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership with the British High Commission marks a significant step forward in our efforts to strengthen Punjab’s healthcare system. By focusing on evidence-based policy-making, capacity building, and accountability, we aim to deliver better health outcomes for all residents of Punjab.”
The British High Commission’s health team also conveyed their commitment to supporting Punjab’s healthcare initiatives, emphasizing the potential for knowledge sharing and technical expertise exchange between the UK and Pakistan.
As these initiatives unfold, the people of Punjab can look forward to a more robust, efficient, and accessible healthcare system. The collaboration between the Punjab Health Department and the British High Commission stands as a testament to the power of international partnerships in addressing critical healthcare challenges.
